Funny Best Man Toast

When you are asked to speak as best man in a wedding, you will probably be asked to inject humor through jokes in your speech. Beware, however, since humor can be the double-edged sword with which you can reduce guests to tears either in laughter or in sadness. Of course, you want the guests and the bridal couple to smile and laugh at your jokes!

With that being said, here are tips on choosing appropriate jokes to incorporate in your best man speech.

Fit the Joke with the Speech

You must choose a joke that fits the general theme and tone of your speech. Don't use a joke just because you find it funny albeit off-tangent to your speech since you will leave your audience feeling annoyed, bored and confused.

Of course, it does not have to be a joke since a humorous story or a funny anecdote about the couple or about your relationship with them as an introduction to your speech will also elicit the laughter you want. Just make sure that you don't offend the sensibilities of the couple and of the guests with your choice of jokes.

Fit the Joke with the Audience

Every individual has a unique sense of humor engendered by his/her cultural background, religious orientation, social status and age. As such, your jokes must be sufficiently neutral such that sense and sensibilities as well as pride and prejudices will not be offended. It can seem like a difficult thing to do but with the myriad of "safe" jokes out there, you can certainly find one to fit the audience.

No matter the audience, however, vulgar jokes about sex and sexuality as well as race and religion should be avoided. Regardless of the fact that a wedding can be a start to procreation doesn't mean that you can make jokes about sex. There is a place for that and it is called the stag party.

Choose Fresh Jokes

Although you may use jokes from online sources, text messages and books, drawing upon your own personal experiences make it fresher than most. Besides, you can deliver the joke in a more confident manner because you know of it intimately!

And speaking of confidence, you have to tell your joke with a straight face, or if you must make a facial expression, a smile. Neither preface the joke with a laughing face because then you cannot tell it straight and the humor will be lost on your audience nor introduce it by saying "Let me tell you a joke about the groom" because then you are cluing in your audience about it. Just tell it and get it over with.

And speaking of over, when you have told the joke and the audience doesn't laugh, just go on as if they did. When you expect the audience to laugh at your joke, you will soon find that either the laughs are tepid or that the joke is on you.

In closing, when choosing jokes and thus inserting laughter into your best man speech, always follow the 5-point criteria of appropriateness with the speech, comfort level of the audience, brevity of the joke, freshness of the humor, and your confidence in delivering it. You will gleefully discover that your speech will be the talk of weddings to come!
